Key Figures on Aquatic Genetic Resources
With about 31,000 known species worldwide, fish, including teleost and cartilaginous fish and cyclostomes (a fishlike but jawless vertebrate group) are just as species-rich as all remaining groups of vertebrates together. Mussels, too, with currently about 15,000 known species and decapods (e.g. crayfish, crabs, lobsters, prawns and shrimp) with around 18,000 species, belong to groups of aquatic organisms with a high biodiversity. This diversity is closely linked to the highly diverse aquatic habitats.
