The scientific activities under the responsibility of the BMELV are coordinated in the Ministry. Besides this they are networked by the Senate of the Federal Research Institutes. The senate consists of representatives of the four Federal Research Institutes (Julius Kühn Institute, Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Max Rubner Institute and Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute), the BfR and the six Leibniz Institutes.

For the field of biodiversity the “Senate Working Group Biodiversity” was established with the task to better link the research activities inside as well as outside of the departmental research. The Working Group examines questions about biodiversity on different levels- the genetic level, the species level and on the level of landscapes. In 2007, the Working Group published an overview of the research activities of the departmental research in the field of biodiversity, that is currently updated.
