In addition to the livestock species of cattle, pigs and poultry, the livestock strategy of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) should also be applied to the husbandry of sheep and goats. Within the framework of the BMEL's Innovation Funding Program and the Federal Program for Organic Farming and Other Forms of Sustainable Agriculture (BÖLN), funding is now being provided for measures that will lead to the further development of the livestock strategy with regard to the breeding and keeping of sheep and goats.

The project outlines, which can be submitted to the BLE until December 15, 2021, should contain innovative research and development projects that improve the breeding and husbandry of sheep and goats. They can address aspects of the entire production and value chains of sheep and goat farming, from production and processing to marketing of dairy and meat products, wool and derived products, and ecosystem services such as landscape management.

The conservation and sustainable use of native sheep and goat breeds is also part of the program.
