The Sachsenhuhn is a local chicken breed and is currently listed by the Advisory Council on Animal Genetic Resources on its "List of Old Native Poultry Breeds in Germany" in the highest risk category "Extremely Endangered". The breed originated around 1880 in the Erzgebirge with the aim of creating an insensitive chicken for any climate with easy rearing. Sachsenhühner are suitable for both egg and meat production. Especially the easy rearing and the high adaptability to different climatic conditions make this breed very interesting.

In the project in the Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft biosphere reserve 500 eggs were now laid in an incubator. In response to an appeal by the biosphere reserve administration to take over the hatched animals, around 330 interested parties - mostly from the region - have responded, so that demand far exceeds supply. This should be used as a stimulus for further actions.
