Gain better yields by protecting pollinators

New film about a project in Morocco for pollinator protection in agriculture

Quelle: Ahlam Sentil, ICARDA-FAP team

The 50-minute film shows how pollinator protection can work in agricultural landscapes. It accompanies farmers in Morocco who know the diversity of pollinators and natural enemies in their fields and shows which pollinators are efficient for which crops, how farmers attract these insects and how to provide nesting sites between fields. Farmers from Morocco comment on the approach, which increases their income. Various representatives from research, extension services and policymakers in Morocco give further insight.

Pollinator protection based on wildflower strips is common practice in Germany but it is too expensive for developing countries. Farming with Alternative Pollinators (FAP) is a scalable approach to pollinator protection and sustainable intensification of agriculture for all countries. The film documents the fourth FAP project, "Conservation of pollinator diversity for enhanced climate change resilience" (2017-2022), which is funded by the Federal Environment Ministry through the International Climate Initiative and is being implemented in six countries (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Turkey).

The film shows the diverse and unpaid labour force in fields and orchards in Morocco, the importance of pollinators for biodiversity, ecosystems and human well-being and how farmers increase their income by supporting wild pollinators and natural enemies. Individual farmers like Mohamed Choukri and Laroussi Touil report on their observations. Planting instructions for four different agro-ecosystems are shown and explained how they can be adapted for use in other countries.
