The FAO State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020

In June, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its biennial State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) report. The SOFIA report is the largest and most reliable summary of global seafood data. Regarding the report, the fisheries and aquaculture sector significantly expanded in the past decades and total production, trade and consumption reached an all-time record in 2018. However, since early 1990s, most growth in production from the sector as a whole has been from aquaculture, while capture fisheries production has been relatively stable. Sustainable aquaculture development and effective fisheries management are critical to maintain these trends.
