GenTree „Optimizing the management and sustainable use of forest genetic resources in Europe“ was recognized for its scientific excellence, its European dimension and its great societal impact, tackling issues that are strategic for generations to come, such as the resilience of forest ecosystems and their underpinning genetic diversity. The project focused on 12 ecologically and economically important tree species (including beech, spruce, Scots pine, and black poplar) in Europe that cover a wide range of habitats and have differentiated societal benefits and values.

22 institutions from 16 countries participated in this project, which had a financial volume of 8 million euros. From Germany, the Thünen Institute of Forest Genetics and the Amt für Waldgenetik Teisendorf were among those involved.
