It was preceded by the IPBES Stakeholder Day to involve the non-governmental actors.
Delegates engaged in intensive and exhausting discussions over the seven-day meeting. They presented an update on the ongoing work, provided progress reports on the scope, selection of experts, and timeline of reports on the links of biodiversity to health, climate, water, food and energy (Nexus) and on transformative change.
During the week, delegates convened in two working groups:
- The assessment on the sustainable use of wild species
2. The assessment on the multiple values of nature.
Both working groups discussed in detail and controversially the respective summaries for policy makers, the plenary finally adopted them after several days of negotiations and accepted the underlying chapters of both assessments. The work done in this way forms a solid basis for the further improvement of the scientific-political knowledge base on biodiversity and the decision-making processes based on it.
Other decisions of the 9th Plenary were:
- The adoption of the scoping for methodological assessment on the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity
- A decision on proposals for cooperation between IPBES and IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)
- The adoption of the work programmes for the IPBES task forces and the Nature Futures Framework
- The election of 25 new members of the IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (including Prof. Josef Settele from Germany for the WEOG region)
- The approval of the budget for the years 2022 and 2023
For 2023, the USA had already announced that they would host the event. The tenth IPBES plenary meeting is therefore expected to take place in Madison, Wisconsin, in the third quarter of 2023. Where and in what form the eleventh IPBES plenary meeting in 2024 will take place is currently unclear.
